Second Semester Information

 Fall semester has ended. It was very successful, in spite of all the obstacles, thanks to the directors and parents for being flexible.  

Online groups - World Percussion and Bitty Beats will continue online, all the other groups will meet in person. Online groups begin on January 22nd and ends on April 16th - 12 weeks of classes, with Good Friday off.

In person groups: Choir, Guitar, and Band/Strings will begin on Friday, February 5th, and ends on Friday, April 30th - 12 weeks of classes, with Good Friday off.  A traditional recital is not planned, but we may look at an online option.  For in person groups, there will be a cleaning and disinfecting of surfaces required and a protocol to follow, so the church is left sanitized at the end of the day. 

In person groups include choir, guitar, and band/strings, and meet at 146 Indian Ave.

Encore Home School Fine Arts - Annual Meet and Greet

I hope everyone's summer is going slow - no need to rush the beautiful season of spring and summer.

We have a date for our annual "meet and greet". This is an opportunity for those not familiar with our group, to meet the directors, try band and stringed instruments, learn about our program, and ask questions. Those who are ready to sign up for classes, can attend to get names on the rosters.

2018-2019 Kaw Valley Home Educators

 Kaw Valley Home Educators is a Christian homeschool co-op learning group for 4 year olds through 6th grade that just completed our first school year together. We meet twice a month on the first and third Thursday mornings. Nursery for younger siblings is included.  We have time for class and P.E., and occasional special events or field trips. This last school year was our first and it went awesome. Everyone jumped in with both feet and worked together to make our meetings successful. We ended the year with 17 families, 38 kids in class, and another 14 kids in nursery. We are going to keep our same format and schedule for this coming school year. Our first meeting will be September 21st. Our goal is to support each other as homeschool families and provide opportunities for our kids to learn together and get to know each other. Science Classes for 2018-2019

We are in the midst of beginning to organize our science classes for next year. 

Two retired homeschooling moms are offering science classes. If you are interested, please contact the mom who is teaching that particular class directly.

Cathy Barfield is a mom of three married daughters and three grandsons. Cathy has a degree in Biology. She taught for three years in South Africa and has offered some kind of science class to homeschoolers yearly since 1998.

Cathy Barfield is offering the following two classes.

Biology (designed for 9-12th)
No math prerequisite but should be taking Algebra 1 in the same school year (only to be ready for Chemistry the following year).

Textbook is Apologia’s second edition of Exploring Creation With Biology. There is a one-time lab fee of $40 and a monthly class fee of $40. The class will meet weekly for 2 hours and will include lab work. The class will meet on Tuesday mornings from 9:00-11:00 am at Cathy's home. This year long class will start September 5th with the last day May 22.

Physical Science (designed for 8th grade) - Not the current school year
No prerequisite but the class does introduce some simple Algebra regarding the rearranging of formulas.

Textbook is Apologia’s second edition of Exploring Creation With Physical Science. There is a one-time lab fee of $35 and a monthly class fee of $40. The class will meet weekly for 2 hours and will include lab work.   The class will meet Tuesday afternoons from 12:15-2:15 pm at Cathy's home.  This year long class will start September  5th with the last day May 9th.


Advanced Biology (designed for 11-12th)
One year of introductory biology required (one year of chemistry recommended but not required). 
Textbook is Apologia's The Human Body (fearfully and wonderfully made), 2nd edition, Shannon and Yunis. There is a one-time lab fee of $40 and a monthly fee of $40. The class will meet weekly for about 2 hours and will include lab work. The class will meet Monday afternoons from 1:30-3:30pm at Cathy's home. This year long class will start August 15 with the final exam on May 15.

CHEMISTRY:  High school chemistry class using the Apologia's 2nd edition, Exploring Creation With Chemistry. The class will meet weekly for 2 hours and will include lab work.   The class starts right after Labor Day and will meet Wednesdays from 1:00-3:00 pm.  There is a one-time lab fee of $35 and a monthly cost of $40. Class size limited to 6 students.  

PHYSICS:  High school physics class using Apologia Exploring Creation With Physics, second edition.  This class will meet weekly for 2 hours and include lab work.  This class will meet immediately after Labor Day on Thursdays from 12:15-2:15pm.  There is a one-time lab fee of $35 and a monthly cost of $40.

WCTU Children's Contest


The 2015 spring WCTU Children’s Contest is here! Your child has three contests in which he might compete: Picture Coloring Contest (K-3); Poster Contest (4-12); Essay Contest (4-12). Every contestant receives an small award for participating. Both the State Contests and National Contests awards cash prizes.

WCTU (Woman’s Christian Temperance Union) promotes abstinence from the use of alcohol, tobacco, and drugs. The Children’s Contests are an enjoyable way for children to learn this abstinence message. The rules, judging and awards are all privately funded and managed through the WCTU. No tax dollars are involved.

The Picture Coloring Contest (grades K-3) is fun. Each grade has its own picture of one or more ducks to color with an abstinence message.

The Poster Contest (grades 4-12) is for those who like art. This contest is divided into three divisions: Division I—grades 4-6; Division II—grades 7-9; Division III—grades 10-12.

The Essay Contest (grades 4-12) is for those who enjoy writing. This contest is also divided into three divisions the same as the Poster Contest. The award money for essays is a bit higher than for posters. There are not many contestants who enter this Contest, so the possibility of winning is higher. There were NO contestants in Div. III in 2014, so I had to return ALL the award money (1st down through Honorable Mention) to our state treasurer. National essay 1st place awards: $125 for Div. III; $100 for Div. II; and $75 for Div. I. State awards are less than the national awards.

First place state winners are entered into the National Contests.

The deadline for the Picture Coloring Contest and the Essay Contest is April 8, 2015. The entries are pre-judged before the annual mid-April WCTU meeting. Posters can be given or mailed to me by April 24, 2015. If you need to mail a poster to me, pack it carefully to prevent damage. Posters are judged ON SITE at the WCTU Mid-year Meeting.
TEACH Drama Presents...

2014 SCHOOL PICTURES
Steven Hertzog Of Creative Road Studio (formerly Linwood Road Studio) has again agreed to take school pictures for TEACH. However, the photo shoot will take place with Veritas Christian School on  Wednesday, September 17th from 9:00- 11:00 am in the gymnasium at Veritas 256 N. Michigan Street, Lawrence 66044. The gymnasium is through the double doors of the main building.

Since the homeschool photos will occur between Veritas classes, there may be a short wait. Steven is asking for the names of all who will have their picture taken ahead of time. Please email Cathy Barfield no later than September 12th. The email should include the children's names, and a parent name with phone number and email. Steven will have all the names printed ahead of time. When you arrive, the student will be handed his pre-printed name with a bar code to hand to the photographer when it is their turn for pictures. This will ensure that your children will not get mixed up with the Veritas students. If you want a sibling shot taken besides the individual shots, I need to know that ahead of time so that another piece of paper (with bar code) with the siblings' names can be made up separately.

Payment is not required ahead of time. You will need to make arrangements with Cathy Barfield to pick up your proof sheets. The proof sheets consist of 4 poses to choose from. If you wish to order, the different packages and their cost will be indicated on the proof sheet. The proof sheet will indicate the due date for the order. You may drop off your order to Cathy or at Veritas (give to Linda Walton in the office) before the due date. When the pictures arrive, they will be given to Cathy to distribute. I will send email reminders but if you do not check your email frequently, then please make sure and indicate this to Cathy and she can either phone or text you.

Science Classes for 2014-2015 School Year

There are TWO moms that will be offering science classes. The actual starting days and dates are yet to be determined as well as where the classes will take place. The church that has hosted the classes is up for sale but desires to continue hosting at its new location (yet to be determined). At this time, we need to see the interest. Both moms are willing to teach out of their homes if needed but the class space may be limited. Please contact Cathy for interest in Physical Science and Biology and contact Robin Brooks for interest in Chemistry and Physics.


The following two classes, Physical Science and Biology, will be taught by Cathy Barfield:
Cathy homeschooled three daughters all the way through high school with the youngest completing high school in 2007. She majored in biology with almost a minor in physical science. She substituted in secondary schools and taught biology for 3 years in South Africa before homeschooling. Cathy has offered year long science classes to homeschoolers since 1998.


Physical Science, (approx. 8th grade level)
Textbook: Apologia’s Exploring Creation With Physical Science (must be 2nd Edition)
This course is designed to be the last science course the student takes before high school biology. This year long course discusses such topics as the atmosphere, the hydrosphere, weather, the structure of the earth, environmentalism, the physics of motion, Newton’s Laws, gravity, and astrophysics. The author especially concentrates on the myths generated by the hysterical environmentalist movement. There are many hands-on experiments to do that all use household chemicals and supplies. It is an excellent course for preparing the student to take a college-prep high school science curriculum. This course will introduce Algebra and the student will work with formulas. The class will meet on Wednesday afternoons from 1-3 pm. The first class will begin August 27th and go through May 13th. A one-time lab fee of $25 will be charged. The monthly class fee will be $40.

Biology, (designed for 9th -10th grade)
No math pre-requisite
1 credit science with lab
Textbook: Apologia’s Exploring Creation With Biology (2nd edition)
The year long course emphasizes the biological classification system studying the five major kingdoms (Monera, Protista, Fungi, Animalia, and Plantae). There is a heavy emphasis on laboratory work. The student will become familiarized with using the microscope, viewing prepared slides or making their own slides. There will be numerous dissections of preserved specimens (owl pellet, earthworm, crayfish, grasshopper, perch, frog, and fetal pig). This class will meet on Tuesday afternoons from 12:30-3:00 pm. The first class will be August 26th and go through May 19th. A one time lab fee of $35 will be charged. The monthly class fee is $40.

Robin Brooks is interested in offering a Chemistry and/or Physics class for the coming 2014/2015 school year.

Robin is a 'retired' home school mom of six, having graduated her youngest daughter May 2013.  Her formal teacher's training in is music with a second emphasis in math, but she has taken numerous courses in the sciences (besides being a daughter of a science teacher).  She has taught a number of science classes through the years, including junior high science and high school biology, chemistry and physics. Three Contests open to homeschoolers  
sponsored by Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars

 Voice of Democracy Scholarship Competition (open to high school students)
Prizes and scholarships are awarded at the local, district, state and national level. Local winners will advance to the district competition, with the district winner competing at the state level and the state winner competing for college scholarships. State winners receive an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C., March 1-5, 2014, to tour the city, meet our nation's leaders, be honored by the VFW and its Ladies Auxiliary and receive their portion of $152,000 in national awards, the top scholarship being $30,000. To enter, students must write and record a three-to-five minute essay. The 2013-14 theme is "Why I'm Optimistic About Our Nation's Future." The recording (audio tape or audio CD) and the typed essay and entry form must be submitted to the Ladies Auxiliary VFW #1650 by Friday, November 1, 2013. Patriot's Pen Essay Competition (open for students in grade 6 through 8).
As above, students who win local, District and State competitions will advance to the national finals and compete for $46,000 in awards, with the winner receiving $5,000 plus an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. for the winner and a parent or guardian. The top 46 national winners all receive at least $500. To enter, students must write a 300-400 word essay on the 2013-14 theme "What Patriotism Means To Me" and submit it to Ladies Auxiliary VFW Post #1650 by Friday, November 1, 2013. The Young American Creative Patriotic Art (open to students grades 9 through 12)
This competition, now in its 30th year, encourages students to use artistic talents to express their patriotism. Entries are judged on factors including originality of concept and clarity of patriotic expression. No digital art will be accepted. Artwork must be on canvas or paper. As above, students who win local, District and State competitions will advance to the national finals and compete for $21,000 in awards, with the winner receiving $10,000. Sewing classes

Sewing classes for homeschooler's will be offered again this year.  Both beginning and intermediate classes will be available, depending on enrollment.

Class day and times are still being determined. Friday morning/afternoon, at the Morris Center, worked well last year, so I will continue to make that an option.  Classes would meet during and around band, orchestra, and choir.  If there is enough interest, a class could be offered on Tuesday afternoons - during TLC, or Wednesday afternoons - also at Community Bible Chapel.

Each class will meet once a week for approx. 75 minutes.  The  class fee is $95.00 a semester.  Classes will start in mid September and run through November.  Given that we don't have to take days off for illness or weather - we should complete the course work by the end of November.   It would be my desire to not go into December, but we will if necessary.  Second  semester would begin mid January and go through late April.

Beginning Sewing:

The classes will cover hand and basic  machine sewing.  We will do one or two simple projects that will involve  straight machine stitching. To get the most from the class, the students will  need to practice newly learned techniques at home.

There will be  worksheets, general sewing practice, and project work to be completed outside of  class.  Assigned work is due the following week. A notebook, with all the  weekly assignments, notes, vocabulary, worksheets, etc. will be turned in at the  end of the semester.

Each student will need sewing  supplies, a one-inch binder, a portable sewing machine that can be brought to  class each week, and fabric/notions/etc. for an assigned project.

Intermediate Sewing:

These classes will continue where the beginning level left  off.  There will be more seam finishes and hand sewing techniques covered, as well as basic garment construction.  One or two projects will be  completed in this class.  The format of this level will be much like the  beginning level – worksheets, practicing new and old techniques, and project work to be done outside of class.  We will continue to add to the notebook  that was started in the beginning level.

Primary Spanish
Class for 1st-3rd grades presents a rich exposure to Spanish through stories, songs, games, Bible verses, and activities – and each year there are new ones! Children quickly assimilate an impressive repertoire of expressions, greetings, and storytelling vocabulary and also receive an introduction to culture and missions. 
Cost: $100/semester, all materials included.
Wednesdays, 9:30 – 10:30 a.m.

Elementary Spanish
Students in 4th-6th grades love to learn Spanish through storytelling! They will listen to, write, dramatize, and illustrate stories, as well as design original fun narratives. Their boundless creativity propels language acquisition. This class will include missions, geography, culture, and Bible memory.
Cost: $100/semester; text optional.
Wednesdays, 10:45 a.m. – 12:00 noon.
Both elementary groups meet for two semesters; first semester is September 5 – November 28.
Spanish I
The storytelling method catches the imagination of high school students and accelerates the learning process as they quickly begin to use the language rather than simply memorize grammar rules or vocabulary lists. To earn high school credit students will meet once a week for two hours during a full school year and should expect daily homework and weekly tests. Bible memory will be included, and semester grades/evaluations will be provided. Text may be needed. Cost: $150/semester plus text.
Mondays, 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. First semester begins August 27. Parent meeting date to be announced.

Used Curriculum Sale

Due to a busy Spring, the organizing of the used curriculum sale did not get organized. Since then, we have had many people asking about it. This year since the time got away with us, we will do things a little differently. Instead of finding times to drop your books off ahead of time, you will man your own table. Sellers will not need to label a certain way and the buyer can also negotiate with the seller directly.

Sellers: If you set up promptly at 6 pm then you may have a few minutes to shop before anyone else. Robin Brooks and Wanda Tefft will be there before 6 to let you in. Make sure you bring change! If you do not get everything sold, you can post curriculum on the TEACH blog. We will send out a separate email with instructions.

Buyers: There will be table to renew your TEACH membership and various sign-ups will be available too. (TLC, science classes, TEACH graduation...)

Formal 2012

Announcing:  One Enchanted Evening -  a formal event for TEACH students in
10th - 12th grade - to be held at Community Bible Church in Lawrence.


The formal will be held on Friday evening, April 20th from 6:00pm - midnight.
All attendees must be homeschooled, in grades 10th, 11th, or 12th, and members
of TEACH. Expired TEACH memberships can be renewed in time for the formal.

TEACH alumni are welcome to attend if membership is current.

Each student will need an advanced/paid reservation for the formal.
The ticket price is $30.00 per person and the deadline for the reservation is March 30th.
There will be a late fee of $10.00 added to reservations made from March 31st through April 10th.
No reservations will be accepted after April 10th.

The evening will begin with a social hour from 6:00 - 7:00. Dinner will be served at 7:00.

This formal evening is planned for the enjoyment of everyone and we ask that
each attendee plan to use modesty as a guideline for choosing formal attire.

Ladies: No cleavage, no backless dresses, no plunging necklines or short
hemlines. (no shorter than 2 inches above the knee)

Gentlemen: Long-sleeved dress shirts with ties, dark dress pants, or suit,
and dress shoes.

NO casual wear. ALL attendees MUST stay in formal attire throughout the
entire evening.


The evening will begin with a social hour from 6:00 - 7:00. Dinner will be served at 7:00.
Menu: Garden Salad, Chicken Cordon Bleu, Cheddar Potatoes, Fruit Kabobs, Croissant Roll,
and a Dessert.

A group activity and an evening of dancing will follow the meal.

A photographer will be taking posed and random photos throughout the
evening. Each student will receive a CD with these photos.

October's Social Night

October's social night has been added to the calendar.  It is a "back to the books bash" and we are encouraging all the students to come dressed as a character from a favorite book you have read, or decorate a mask in a theme or character of a favorite book.

There will be a prize awarded for the most creative costume and/or mask.  Masks can be as simple as something made with construction paper or made from a paper bag.  Or you could head to the craft store and purchase a "blank" mask to decorate.

If you have any questions, be sure to ask.

So here are the details:

When: Friday, October 7th - from 7:00pm - 9:30pm.  Please have students picked up no later than 9:45.

Where:  The Morris Center - 146 Indian Ave. - Lawrence

Who:  TEACH members in grades 7th - 12th.

What to bring: Please bring a snack AND a 2-liter bottle of pop, juice, tea, etc.  In the past, we have had a few events where there wasn't enough food or drinks to last through the evening.

Also, it is time to stock up on items that are used for our events, like paper products - so we are asking everyone to bring $3.00 to help cover the cost of these items and door prizes for future social nights.

Encore begins rehearsing this Friday - Sept. 9th

There is still time to sign up for the Encore Fine Arts groups. We begin rehearsing this Friday - September 9th, but there is time to get an instrument and join a group - or sing in choir.

Speech and Debate - class forming

To help prepare and encourage students in competitive speech and debate competition, I am forming a new speech and debate club on Tuesday afternoons from 1:00-3:00, starting September 13th at the Morris Baptist Center.

Emphasis will be on developing speaking, reading, writing, and research skills. Due to my current reading difficulties, parents will need to assist their student in writing and proofreading speeches. Class size is limited. There will be an instructional class for parents to explain debate leagues, submission requirements, etc. The tutoring fee is $25 per month, except December (no classes). Date set for opportunity to learn about homeschool band, orchestra, and choir

Encore Homeschool Fine Arts, in Lawrence, KS, will be offering an opportunity to try out various band and orchestra instruments for those wishing to join our group We offered this last year and it was a success - many students had a chance to try any instrument that was available that day. The goal was to find a good match between the student and instrument, and that was accomplished.

Mark your calendar for Friday, August 12th - from 10:00am to noon. We will meet at the Morris Baptist Center - 146 Indian Ave. - in Lawrence. Students and their families can come and meet the directors, try instruments, learn about our groups, and ask questions.

An instrument repair person will be available that day for those who already have an instrument and want it evaluated or repaired. Information regarding places to rent or purchase new or used instruments will be available as well.


The levels of band and orchestra for this year are based on enrollment but we are planning on the following:

Beginning Band - no musical experience required

Beginning Orchestra - no musical experience required

Intermediate Band - audition required

Intermediate Orchestra - audition required

Jazz Band - audition AND enrollment in an intermediate/advanced group is required.

Advanced Band - audition required

And new this year - Percussion Ensemble - no previous musical experience is required - space is limited. More information about this new group will be posted on our website in the coming weeks.

Audition info: For those students that wish to be in intermediate/advanced groups or jazz, an audition with the director will be required.(no audition is required for beginning groups) The student prepares a piece of music that demonstrates their ability and plays it for the director. Auditions will be held the same day as the instrument "try-out" day - starting at 12:30 pm - first come, first heard basis.
